The Olympics was thought to have started in 776 BCE in Greece. There were games thrown in the honor of the Greek god Zeus. It was held every 4 years in a valley in the southwest of Greece called Olympia. The Greek Olympics inspired the morden Olympic Games which began in 1896.
The first Olympic Games only lasted a day, and the only event was running from one end of the stadium to the other. There were only ten sports in the Ancient Greek Olympics. Such as Chariot Racing! Now there are more than thirty different sports. In the Olympic Games in Tokyo they added four new competitions for people to join — surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and karate.
One of the craziest events of the Ancient Olympic games was the Pankration, also known as all-in wrestling. It literately had no rules, except poking eyes and biting! However, many competitors ignored these rules. You can even carry on hitting your opponent even he is knocked to the ground! Fortunately, our modern Olympics is unlike the ancient Olympics and has more strict rules.
